Gambling addiction: a gap in member support

Unions have decades of peer support for drinking and drugs. Gambling has had far less attention, and betting on a phone is easy to miss. A 2025 Saint Louis University survey of union workers noted there was no reliable data yet on members' gambling.

Young members are the most likely to bet. Pew Research found 31% of adults 18 to 29 bet on sports in the past year, including 36% of young men.
