Maine allows online sports betting through mobile apps operated with the state's tribes. It started in November 2023. You have to be at least 21 to bet on sports in Maine. Betting is overseen by the Maine Gambling Control Unit.

How to self-exclude from sports betting in Maine

Self-exclusion means putting your own name on a list that stops licensed sportsbooks from taking your bets. It takes the decision out of your hands on the nights you can't trust yourself.

In Maine, the main option is the Maine Self-Exclusion (through ADEPT).

  • Self-exclusion for casinos and sports wagering is handled by ADEPT's problem gambling services, and the state's Gambling Control Unit keeps the list.
  • You choose 1 year, 3 years, 5 years or lifetime. You have to finish a shorter term before choosing lifetime.
  • You can enroll online over a Zoom meeting, or in person at select community locations.
  • ADEPT also offers free counseling and financial services.

State lists can take a few days to reach every operator. Cover that window by excluding inside every app you've used, starting with the one you used most.

Watching sports in Maine without betting

Sportsbooks know which teams people in Maine care about, so the promos follow the Maine Black Bears. Mute the commercials, delete any betting app that's still hiding on your phone, and give yourself something to do at halftime.

More on this in watching sports after you quit.

Close the other doors

Self-exclusion works best with a few more walls around it:

  • Install a gambling blocker on every device and lock your phone settings so you can't reinstall apps on impulse. See how to block sports betting apps.
  • Remove saved cards from betting sites, and ask your bank about blocking gambling transactions.
  • If debt is piling up, a nonprofit credit counselor at NFCC.org can help.

FAQ

What's the legal sports betting age in Maine?

You have to be at least 21 to bet on sports in Maine.

How do I self-exclude from sports betting in Maine?

You can enroll online over a Zoom meeting, or in person at select community locations.

Does self-excluding from one app cover every sportsbook in Maine?

No. Excluding inside one app only blocks that app. The Maine Self-Exclusion (through ADEPT) is what covers licensed operators across Maine, so use both, and add a blocker for offshore sites that ignore state programs.

Is there gambling rehab in Maine?

We don't list a gambling-specific inpatient or intensive program inside Maine yet. Outpatient counseling is available through the state's problem gambling resources and online therapy, and some residential programs in other states accept people from anywhere. See your options on Find Help.
